Numeracy

High Impact Mathematics Teaching for All

At Brandon Park Primary School, our dedicated teachers employ an effective instructional approach called Explicit Direct Instruction to deliver five hours of weekly numeracy sessions aligned with the Victorian Curriculum. Our students actively explore Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, as well as Statistics and Probability concepts using a combination of hands-on materials and innovative teaching practices. We utilise both quantitative and qualitative data to inform our teaching and ensure that learning is differentiated to meet the unique needs of each student.

To support optimal learning outcomes, we interleave topics in mathematics. This method involves teaching each strand of the curriculum each week, as opposed to focusing on a single topic over a longer period of time. This approach is backed by a rigorous evidence base and is designed to combat the forgetting curve of knowledge to facilitate the transfer of learned skills to long-term memory.

In the Junior Levels (F-2), our students develop a solid foundation in number facts through engaging activities, hands-on materials, and digital technologies. They also participate in Mathematics Fluency sessions and Daily Reviews, which further enhance their understanding and automaticity with number facts.

Moving to the Middle Levels (3-4), students expand their problem-solving abilities, including the use of standard algorithms for the four operations. They continue to deepen their understanding of numeracy concepts, with a specific focus on multiplication facts. Regular Maths Fluency sessions and Daily Reviews reinforce previously learned content.

In the Senior Levels (5-6), our students develop efficient strategies to solve mathematical problems, employing both mental and written approaches. They explore more advanced numeracy topics, such as measuring angles using protractors, solving complex equations with BODMAS, understanding cartesian planes, and establishing connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages. This comprehensive preparation equips our students with the necessary foundational knowledge as they transition into secondary school. They also engage in Maths Fluency sessions and Daily Reviews to consolidate their learning from previous years.

At Brandon Park Primary School, our commitment to delivering high-quality, differentiated numeracy education ensures that all students are challenged and supported at their individual level, setting them on a path to lifelong mathematical success.

Effective Numeracy Instruction

At Brandon Park, we apply the principles of Explicit Direct Instruction to all Mathematics Teaching and Learning. We have a strong focus on building students’ conceptual understanding and mastering mathematical fluency.

By making the recall of number facts and maths concepts fluent and automatic, children’s working memory is freed up to focus on deep problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
